Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc.

VISTA Program

Through annual grant support from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and partner site support, RurAL CAP acts as a Multi Focus Intermediary to partner with Alaska agencies to place Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) members. VISTA members work to build capacity and expand opportunities to bring low income communities out of poverty. Our Fiscal Year 2018 partners include:

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium

ANTHC has a healthy homes and respiratory health project that focuses on housing improvements and connecting economically disadvantaged people to health care. The goal of the project is to improve the respiratory health of residents through home-based intervention. Those interventions include the housing authority performing home modifications, and education geared at increasing water usage and improving air quality. The VISTA will focus interpreting air quality and respiratory health data, as well as developing and presenting educational material based on that data. The VISTA will also work with rural community stakeholders to help them collaborate on services that benefit respiratory health for residents.

Burchell High School

Burchell High School is an alternative High School in Wasilla, Alaska. Burchell is using the VISTA resource to engage students in: restorative justice; parent education programs; and financial literacy. Burchell is actively engaging a VISTA member to promote post high school success for their students. Read more about Burchell High School
